ROXAS CITY, Capiz – The province of Capiz celebrated its 123rd founding anniversary on Monday and commemorated the 76th death anniversary of President Manuel A. Roxas.
The Civil Government of Capiz was established in 1901 through Act No. 115 entitled, “An Act Extending the Provisions of the Provincial Government Act to the Province of Capiz.”
A Thanksgiving mass was held at the Immaculate Concepcion Metropolitan Cathedral, followed by an opening program led by Gov. Fredenil Castro in front of the provincial capitol.
During the opening program, Castro urged Capisnons to commit to the “One Capiz!” campaign of the provincial government as he officially opened the 2024 Capiztahan festivities slated until May 1.
A raising of the Philippine flag and the provincial, city, and municipal banners was also held, accompanied by an array of performances showcasing the culture of Capiz.
After these, a wreath-laying ceremony followed at the President Manuel A. Roxas monument.
A memorial day for President Roxas is observed every April 15 to honor the legacy and contribution to the country of the late president and Capiz’s most illustrious son. He was the fifth President of the Philippines, the third and last President of the Commonwealth, and the first President of the Third Republic.
During his term as Senate President, he displayed profound statesmanship and intelligence, making his mark as a master of economics. He was among the “seven wise men” who drew up the Constitutional Convention.
The series of activities for the opening of Capiztahan 2024 concluded with colors in the sky through a fireworks show at the Capiz Bridge along the Panay River.
The Capiztahan celebration is led by the Capiz provincial government with the Maragtas of Capiz Foundation, Inc. (With reports from Philippine Information Agency-Capiz and The Quest Publication-CAPSU Main Campus)/PN
