ROXAS City – The seafood capital of the Philippines is getting ready for the launching of the first international triathlon in Capiz dubbed Triaksyon 2017 set on April 22 and 23.
The sporting event aims to showcase the province as a sports and tourism destination, too.
The Jan. 27 launching will take place take at the scenic Baybay Beach and will begin with an inaugural open water swim by Betsy Medalla, the first Asian to cross the icy waters of Cape Town (a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast) and complete the Robben Island Channel, also in South Africa.
The inaugural swim will start from the shoreline across People’s Park going to the symbolic Mantalinga islet. It will coincide with a fun run and fun ride by Capiznon athletes.
“Capiz is a very good venue for a triathlon and through this we can showcase the natural beauty and topographical assets of the province that will encourage international interest,” said Triaksyon 2017 chairman Greg Atienza during a coordination meeting called by Capiz governor Antonio del Rosario.
The provincial government has approved in its annual investment program a P47-million fund to further develop the sports facilities of the Villareal Stadium, which will serve as the finish line of the two-day triathlon.
About 300 local, national and international tri-athletes are expected to converge in the province to join the triathlon that will include kids, sprint, and standard and relay categories.
The triathlon will pass through several tourism destinations in Capiz such as Baybay Beach, the historical Panay Church that houses the largest Catholic bell in Asia, Villareal Stadium which contains the largest Olympic swimming pool in the region, and Pueblo de Panay township.
Triaksyon is an event sanctioned by Triathlon Association of the Philippines./PN
