CAPIZ — The Provincial Government of Capiz joined the celebration of the Chinese New Year 2026, welcoming the Year of the Fire Horse and highlighting the vibrant cultural heritage of the Filipino-Chinese community in the province.
The annual observance in Capiz formally commenced through a directive of Governor Fredenil H. Castro and the enactment of Provincial Ordinance No. 356, with the support of Vice Governor James Magbanua. The ordinance recognizes the significant contributions of the Filipino-Chinese community to the cultural, social, and economic development of Capiz. This year marks the third consecutive celebration institutionalized by the provincial government.
On February 16, Capisnons and members of the Chinese-Filipino community gathered for the official kickoff of the festivities held in front of the Provincial Capitol.
The celebration featured traditional ceremonies, including the Lion and Dragon Eye Dotting Ceremony and lively Lion and Dragon Dances, showcasing the rich customs and traditions of the Chinese community. The performances, organized by the provincial government and presented by Capiz Commercial School, are believed to usher in good fortune, prosperity, and continued progress in the New Year while driving away misfortune.
Gov. Castro underscored that the celebration symbolizes sustained cooperation and partnership between the provincial administration and the Chinese-Filipino community, aimed at strengthening relations and fostering peaceful coexistence in the province.
“There is no singular identity of just being Chinese or Filipino; we are all one community united for the advancement of our province,” Castro said.
Among those present were Vice Gov. James Magbanua, Atty. Luvim Amores, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, department heads, city officials, and Congressman Howard Guintu, all expressing a shared commitment to unity and progress in Capiz.
