MANILA – Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as the new titular of Albano, a suburbicarian diocese the pontiff held before his election as pope.
Tagle, the pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, takes over from Pope Leo, who had been the cardinal bishop of Albano since February 2025.
“The Holy Father has assigned the Title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano to His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, pro-prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization in the Section for First Evangelization and the new particular Churches,” the Vatican said in a press release.
Prior to his papal election, Leo was the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under the late Pope Francis.
The Diocese of Albano, situated just outside of Rome, is one of the seven suburbicarian sees that have historically been linked to cardinal bishops, the highest-ranking order within the College of Cardinals.
Before being granted the title of the Suburbicarian Church of Albano, Tagle had been serving as the cardinal priest of the Church of San Felice da Cantalice in Centocelle since 2012.
In 2022, Pope Francis promoted him to the order of cardinal bishops, assigning him to the same titular church./PN
