ILOILO City – Nikhel Supeda Nowlakha, a Grade 6 student from Central Philippine University, is only 12-years old, yet he’s already making a name for himself in the very competitive national tennis arena.
The Cabatuan native is currently ranked as the No. 1 Visayas player in the 14-under category of the Philippine Tennis Association, and stands at 14th in the national standings.
Just recently, the young Nowlakha claimed gold during the 2017 West Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet in Antique – adding to his roster of achievements that includes a Regional MILO Little Olympics championship in 2015 and a national-level gold, coming out on top during the 2016 Palarong Pambansa in Legaspi, Albay.
Nowlakha is now bracing for his quest for back-to-back gold medals, as he’s also representing WVRAA in the upcoming 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique.
With his stunning credentials, he was recently chosen by Cebuana Lhuillier tennis tournament director Mario Craiz as one of the 12 players under the age of 15 who will be sent to train at the prestigious IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida this coming June.
The son of Dhir Kumar Nowlakha, an Indian businessman and Ma. Concepcion Supeda, a Certified Public Accountant, Nikhel started to learn the sports when he was in Grade 3.
At the age of 9-years old, coach Ma. Lyn Troncoso, a former National PRISAA tennis champ, saw potential in Nikhel and decided to train and develop him under her wing. His first breakthrough was a gold medal finish in the 3rd District Congressional Meet in 2012./PN
