BANATE, Iloilo — Devotees in this coastal town reaffirmed a centuries-old tradition of faith and remembrance as they took part in the annual “Biray” fluvial procession and traslación honoring Saint John the Baptist (San Juan de Bautista), turning the sea and streets of Banate into a living testament to religious devotion and cultural heritage.
Held on June 23, a day before the feast of San Juan, the annual celebration saw parishioners embark on a sea journey aboard around 30 motorboats before proceeding to a historic pilgrimage route that commemorates the origins of the town and the sacrifices of its early settlers.
The fluvial procession, one of the most anticipated religious events in Banate, began with the blessing of the vessels carrying devotees across choppy waters, symbolizing both their unwavering faith and the enduring resilience of the community.
After the sea voyage, participants proceeded with the traditional “traslación” toward Barangay Bularan, the site of the town’s former center, where they reflected on Banate’s rich history and spiritual roots.
“This holy march commemorates a pivotal milestone from 1870, when the town’s ancestors decided to transfer the site of the town center to its present location in order to build a more permanent stone church,” the Archdiocese of Jaro, Commission on Social Communications stated.
The procession served as a tribute to the pioneers who helped establish the community and laid the foundation for its religious traditions.
Barangay Bularan, where the remains of some of Banate’s early ancestors have been unearthed, became a focal point of remembrance as devotees offered prayers and reflected on the sacrifices made by previous generations.
Reverend Father John Marc Sarasa led the congregation in prayers of thanksgiving for the gift of faith and sought blessings for the souls of the town’s forebears whose efforts shaped the community.
Adding color to the solemn observance was the presentation of the “Danza de los Estandartes,” a traditional dance featuring swirling banners that showcased the town’s vibrant cultural heritage.
The celebration blended solemn worship, historical remembrance, and cultural expression, highlighting the enduring role of faith in the lives of Banate residents.
The feast culminated on June 24 , yesterday, with the Solemn High Mass marking the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, celebrated annually by Catholics worldwide./PN
