MANILA — Former Ilocos Sur governor and businessman Luis “Chavit” Singson was arrested on June 11 on the strength of a court-issued warrant in connection with a cyber libel case but regained his freedom hours later after posting a P60,000 cash bond.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) confirmed that operatives of the Eastwood Police Station served the warrant at around 1:18 p.m. at Singson’s residence in Barangay Ugong Norte, Quezon City.

The arrest stemmed from Criminal Case No. 10153-V-2026 for alleged violation of Section 4(c)(4) in relation to Section 6 of Republic Act No. 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

The warrant was issued by Judge Marie Gene Cecille Umali of the Regional Trial Court Branch 21 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur and was dated June 10, 2026.

Authorities said the court recommended bail of P60,000 for the temporary liberty of the accused.

Following his arrest, the 84-year-old former governor was taken to Police Station 12 where he underwent standard booking procedures, documentation and other legal requirements.

Court records later showed that Singson posted a cash bond amounting to P60,000 and submitted the required documents for his release.

The court subsequently approved the bond, allowing the former provincial chief executive and businessman to leave police custody while facing the cyber libel charge.

No further details regarding the complaint that led to the filing of the case were immediately disclosed.

The case is expected to proceed before the Regional Trial Court in Vigan City, which issued the warrant for Singson’s arrest./PN
