MANILA – The country’s supply of frozen chicken has reached a record high of 50 million kilos this month, but may disrupted by the looming arrival of the rainy season in May, a business leader said Thursday.

Out of the total frozen supply, 18 million kilos came from local producers while 32 million kilos were imported, said Atty. Bong Inciong, president of the United Broilers Association.

“Record high ho iyun,” he told radio dzMM, noting that the supply in the same period last year was only 14 million kilos.

The farmgate price of chicken was at P80 per kilo last Friday, he said.

dzMM monitoring, however, found that chicken is priced at P140 per kilo in some markets.

It should be the agriculture and trade departments which should explain the gap between the farmgate and retail prices, said Inciong.

He noted that it was still too early for the weather to cause a spike in chicken prices.

Chickens, he said, can withstand high temperatures during summer, but not the hot and wet weather condition during the transition period from the dry season to rainy season in May or June. (ABS-CBN News)
