BABY teeth may be temporary, but their impact on a child’s health is long-lasting.
Pediatric dentists warn that early childhood caries or tooth decay remains one of the most common chronic conditions among children worldwide.
Many parents assume primary teeth are less important because they eventually fall out. But untreated cavities can cause severe pain, infections, and difficulty eating. In extreme cases, dental infections can spread beyond the mouth.
Establishing oral hygiene habits early is crucial. Dentists recommend cleaning an infant’s gums even before teeth erupt. Once teeth appear, brushing with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste twice daily becomes essential.
Diet plays a pivotal role. Frequent snacking on sugary foods and drinks fuels bacteria that produce acid, eroding enamel. Juice and flavored milk, often perceived as healthy, can contribute to decay if consumed excessively.
Regular dental visits should begin by a child’s first birthday, experts say. Early checkups allow dentists to identify potential problems and educate parents about proper care.
School-based programs are proving effective. Dental sealants — thin protective coatings applied to molars — can significantly reduce cavities in children. Community fluoride varnish programs also show promising results.
Socioeconomic disparities persist. Children from low-income households are more likely to experience untreated decay. Limited access to dental services and lack of awareness contribute to the gap.
Public health advocates argue that oral health education must start at home and continue in schools. Simple routines — brushing before bed, limiting sugary snacks, drinking water — can make a profound difference.
As childhood obesity and sugar consumption rise globally, the importance of preventive dental care becomes even more urgent. A healthy smile, dentists remind parents, sets the stage for a healthy future.
