CAPIZ — Chinese-inspired dishes and culinary artistry took the spotlight as 11 teams of Senior High School students from public and private schools in Roxas City competed in the “Gallop of Flavors: Oriental Feast 2026 Cooking Competition” on February 17.
The event, held at the Dadivas Gymnasium of Capiz State University, formed part of the province’s Chinese New Year celebration spearheaded by the Provincial Government of Capiz under Governor Fredenil H. Castro, in partnership with the Filipino-Chinese community.
Organizers said the competition aimed to broaden the knowledge of students and residents on traditional Chinese cuisine while deepening appreciation and respect for cultural traditions that have long influenced the lives of Capisnons.
During the two-hour preparation and presentation period, contestants demonstrated their culinary skills and creativity in plating. Entries were judged based on flavor, cooking techniques, and overall presentation.
Emerging as champion was Tanque National High School for its rendition of “Lo Mai Gai,” a traditional Chinese dish made of glutinous rice, chicken, and spices. Judges commended the team for its exceptional taste and meticulous presentation.
Don Ynocencio Del Rosario National High School secured second place with “Auspicious Sweet & Sour Golden Fish,” followed by Balijuagan National High School in third place for “Golden Fried Chicken in Sweet & Sour Sauce.” Congressman Ramon Arnaldo High School placed fourth with “Sweet & Sour Fish,” while Filamer Christian University finished fifth with “Hongshaorou Lo Mien.”
The event was attended by representatives from the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office led by Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer Alphonsus Tesoro, as well as officials from Capiz Commercial School and personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection, Capiz Police Provincial Office, and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
