Chinese, Koreans still top Boracay tourists

BORACAY – Chinese and Korean nationals still dominate the tourist market in this famed island destination for the first five months of the year.

About 79 percent of tourist arrivals in the island resort are from China and Korea, latest records from the Malay Municipal Tourism Office showed.

From January to May, a total of 218,161 Chinese and 160,973 Korean tourists went to Boracay.

In the same period last year, Boracay accommodated 148,964 tourists from China, or a 46-percent increase, and 150,876 tourists from Korea, or 7-percent increase.

Boracay foreign tourist arrivals totaled to 480,856 from January to May this year, 12 percent higher compared to 430,785 arrivals in same period last year.

These include a total of 12,424 tourist arrivals from United States; 10,953 from Taiwan; and 6,614 from Russia.

On the other hand, the number of domestic foreign arrivals dwindled 10 percent in the same period.

The number of local tourists reached 443,182 from January to May. There were 493,159 during the period the previous year.

Overall, tourist arrivals in Boracay in the first five months of 2019 reached 955,984, higher compared to 947,343 in the same period last year.

As of June 4, the inter-agency task force accredited 358 accommodation establishments with 12,952 rooms in Boracay. (With a report from Akean Forum/PN)
