Classes cancelled due to heavy monsoon rains

BACOLOD City – Classes in southern areas of Negros Occidental were cancelled yesterday due to heavy monsoon rains.

Local officials of Hinigaran, Cauayan, Candoni, and Himamaylan City ordered class suspensions in all levels – preschool, elementary and high school.

Hinigaran mayor Jose Nadie Arceo said the water level in the town’s rivers and other estuaries rose significantly.

Cauayan mayor John Rey Tabujara issued a memorandum ordering schools in upland areas to implement precautionary measures due to possible landslides.

He also warned of flashfloods in low-lying areas.

Negros Occidental governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said the localized suspension of classes was a prerogative of town and city officials.

“I’ve not yet received status reports from these areas but so far there had been no calls for evacuation,” he added.

According to the state weather bureau, a low pressure area off Visayas on Monday intensified into a tropical depression and may stir heavy rains across the country this week.

The tropical depression has been named “Falcon” and is the sixth tropical cyclone this year.

Residents of MIMAROPA, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Sulu archipelago will experience light to moderate to at times heavy monsoon rains today, the weather bureau added./PN
