ILOILO City – The cleanup spearheaded by the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) yielded tons of trash left on the city streets and in markets during the holidays.
According to Engineer Niel Ravena, CENRO head, for the downtown area alone the volume of garbage collected on Jan. 1 reached 26 tons.
They have yet to sum up the volume of garbage collected from other districts.
Ravena said most of the garbage from the main streets such as J.M. Basa and Iznart where from sidewalk vendors who were temporarily allowed to sell for holidays, and from the Terminal and Central markets, were packaging materials such as plastics and scrap fruits and vegetables.
Organic wastes such as fruits and vegetables will be processed for composting.
Ravena said that as early as 4 a.m. on Jan. 1, over 60 street sweepers were deployed to the streets and markets to do the cleanup.
By Jan. 1 also, all sidewalks and roads were cleared of sidewalk vendors, as instructed by Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.
They have also collected firecracker debris./PN
