CAPIZ – Mayor Jonathan “Sonny” Besa of Panay, Capiz has ordered the municipal coastal watch team to intensify regular patrols across Panay’s extensive municipal waters following a reported increase in illegal fishing activities.
In a local radio interview, Besa said the directive aims to curb destructive fishing practices that threaten both marine resources and the livelihoods of small-scale fishers in the municipality.
He stressed that strengthening coastal patrols is a crucial step in protecting the local fishing industry and preserving the marine ecosystem, noting that unchecked illegal fishing could have long-term consequences on food security and coastal sustainability.
To reinforce enforcement, the local government has partnered with the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine National Police–Maritime Group. The collaboration seeks to maximize manpower, equipment, and operational expertise to ensure effective monitoring of Panay’s vast and challenging coastal areas.
Mayor Besa assured legitimate fishers that those who follow the law and secure the required permits have nothing to fear from the intensified operations.
