MANILA – Senators do not mind placing Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile under hospital arrest should the anti-graft court issue a warrant of arrest against him.

Sen. Sergio Osmeña told Panay News the proposal is “justified.”

Enrile, 90, has “so many chronic ailments.”

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano, a known critic of Enrile, also said the court should grant the veteran lawmaker hospital arrest.

Sa konstitusyon natin, ang buhay ng tao ang palaging kina-count,” Cayetano said.

But Enrile should still follow the normal process when arrested, added the senator from Taguig City.

“He should still surrender and be brought to the custodial area. If he experiences health issues, he should immediately see a doctor,” Cayetano said.

The senator reiterated that the same process should also be applied to ordinary detainees.

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, another lawmaker whom Enrile had a rift with, previously said the senator should not be placed in an ordinary detention facility.

“(Sen. Enrile) has needs that an ordinary detention facility cannot provide. He can be placed in a detention facility with nursing care,” Trillanes also said.

Malacañang, meanwhile, is mum on proposed house arrest for Enrile.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. told Panay News they are awaiting for the Sandiganbayan’s action on his petitions.

“Let the law be enforced fairly so that the ends of justice will be served,” Coloma said./PN
