MANILA – A House of Representatives member is calling for an investigation on the removal of Filipino subjects in the new General Education Curriculum (GEC) of tertiary educational institutions.

Nakakabahala ang panukala ng Commission on Higher Education (CHED) na tanggalin ang mandatoryong pag-aaral ng ating pambansang wika,” said Kabataan party-list’s Cong. Terry Ridon.

Memorandum Order 20-2013 of CHED removed Filipino subjects, and only prescribed a revised 36-unit GEC for tertiary schools.

The curriculum previously comprised 63 units for humanities and social science majors and 51 units for science, engineering and math majors.

Filipino subjects will be removed from college instruction because students under the Senior High School Curriculum in the K-12 program already have 108 hours of Filipino subjects, CHED explained.

They also said that college subjects will still be taught either in English or Filipino.

Ridon, however, stressed that teaching in the Filipino language “is not tantamount to teaching tertiary-level Filipino courses.”

Ridon added that they will push for the requirement of at least nine units of Filipino subjects in college./PN
