Comelec prepares contingency plans to protect voters from extreme heat

ILOILO – With the summer heat expected to persist during the May 12 national and local elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Iloilo has assured the public that measures are in place to protect voters’ health against the intense heat while they cast their ballots.

Atty. Reinier Layson, provincial election supervisor for Comelec-Iloilo, confirmed that local government units (LGUs) have been working closely with City and Municipal Election Officers, coordinating through Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (MDRRMOs) to implement necessary precautions.

These measures are aimed at providing first aid and emergency care to voters who may suffer from heat-related issues.

“We’ve made sure that our partners are on standby to provide emergency medical response in case of a heatstroke or any other health emergency,” said Layson.

Additionally, he emphasized that volunteers and rescue groups, including ambulances from each MDRRMO, will be stationed at polling centers to ensure quick medical intervention should a voter require immediate attention or transport to a nearby health facility.

While these precautions are in place, Layson urged registered voters to take personal health measures in preparation for the elections.

He recommended voters get plenty of rest the night before, have a good breakfast, stay hydrated, and take necessary medications, especially for those with high blood pressure.

He also advised voters, particularly those in vulnerable sectors, to arrive early at voting centers to minimize exposure to the heat.

“Bring sun protection like umbrellas or hats, and make sure to carry enough water to avoid dehydration,” Layson added.

To further ensure the smooth running of the election, Comelec is also coordinating with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to be on high alert in case of any fire-related incidents at polling centers.

Layson stressed that the BFP would be ready to assist if needed, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the election process is not disrupted by unforeseen emergencies.

In partnership with MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power), the Comelec has also worked to ensure a stable and sufficient electricity supply for the elections in Iloilo City.

MORE Power technicians are currently inspecting power lines at all voting centers to prevent any power-related issues or potential fire hazards.

With a total of 1.6 million registered voters in the city and province of Iloilo, Comelec expects a turnout of at least 75 percent.

Layson noted that voter participation is expected to be higher this election, as candidates and party groups are intensifying their campaigns to encourage voter turnout, especially given the significant implications of the results for future elections./PN
