CONGO – The health ministry said the death toll from the Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo has passed 1,000.

DRC’s Ebola outbreak was the second deadliest in history.

World Health Organization deputy director Dr. Michael Ryan said mistrust and violence were harming efforts to tackle the disease as it spread in the eastern part of the country.

The doctor said there were 119 documented attacks on medical centers and staff since January.

He added WHO staff anticipated “continued intense transmission.”

More than 100,000 people have been given the treatment.

Congo is also suffering from an outbreak in measles which has killed more than 1,000 people.

The WHO said the risk of global spread is low, but cases would likely spread into neighboring countries.

Most Ebola outbreaks were over quickly and affect small numbers of people.

Only once before has an outbreak became epidemic in West Africa between 2013 and 2016, which killed 11,310 people. (BBC)
