BACOLOD City – Authorities recovered various contraband items during a greyhound operation at the Negros Occidental District Jail-Male Dormitory (NODJ-MD) in Bago City on Monday, September 1, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology–Negros Island Region (BJMP-NIR) reported.

The surprise inspection, which began at around 4:30 a.m., was conducted to flush out prohibited items inside the facility following intelligence reports that some persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were in possession of unauthorized items, including smartphones.

According to BJMP-NIR spokesperson Jail Senior Inspector Juniven Rey Umadhay, the operation led to the confiscation of improvised bladed weapons, heater equipment, pointed steel bars, and improvised bats that could potentially be used as deadly weapons.

The operation concluded at around 11:20 a.m. with no untoward incidents recorded, and with the full cooperation of the PDLs, Umadhay said.

He added that an investigation is underway to determine how the contraband items were able to enter the facility.

The BJMP stressed that greyhound operations are part of its continuing campaign to ensure safety, discipline, and order in detention facilities by preventing the entry of contraband that may lead to violence.

“The bureau remains steadfast in its mandate to provide safe, secure, and humane safekeeping of PDLs while intensifying efforts to block the entry of prohibited items,” the BJMP said./PN
