MANILA – Authorities were urged to “convert into evidence” a new matrix showing the names of individuals who allegedly financed the Maute group attack in Marawi City.
The matrix, which President Rodrigo Duterte presented on Sept. 22, linked the slain Ozamiz City mayor Reynaldo Parojinog and former Marawi mayor Solitario Ali to the ongoing conflict between government troops and Islamic State-linked group.
“These are intelligence information,” said Sen. Panfilo Lacson. “Ang dapat gawin ng mga awtoridad, i-convert ito into evidence para makapag-file ng kaso.”
A case cannot be filed against those in the matrix “on the basis of information or matrix,” said the senator.
Malacañang on Sunday said the involvement of narco-politicians in the Marawi conflict affirms the connection between drugs and criminal and terrorist activities.
“Local politicians in Mindanao adversely affected by the government’s campaign against illegal drugs have financed the Daesh-inspired Maute group, whose attempt to undermine our sovereignty resulted in the rebellion in Marawi,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.
“It is therefore imperative that we destroy the drug apparatus not only to protect the Filipino family and the youth of the country but also to secure our communities,” he said./PN
