Councilor Parcon dies 10 days after successful reelection bid

ILOILO City – Councilor Armand Parcon died on Thursday night at the West Visayas State University Medical Center due to pneumonia. He was 59.

Yesterday, the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved a resolution extending its sympathy to the Parcon family.

Parcon died 10 days after he was reelected for a third consecutive term on May 13 and 19 days after marking his 59th birthday on May 4.

Councilor Joshua Alim said he lost not only a colleague but a friend, and recalled Parcon’s kindness, humility and industry.

“I once told him, ‘Pre please prioritize your health. It is more important than politics,’” said Alim.

Parcon was hospitalized right after the midterm elections. He was previously diagnosed with lung cancer.

Parcon placed No. 2 in the recent election for city council seats. He got 105,912 votes.

Prior to entering politics, he was a popular reporter and anchorman at DyFM Bombo Radyo Iloilo.

Alim recalled a time when he was stripped of committee chairmanships; Parcon made him vice chairman of the Committee on Police Matters.

Parcon eventually gave way for Alim to chair the committee, thereby allowing him to become a member of the city peace and order council and drug council.

Councilor Candice Magdalane Tupas, too, described Parcon as a good and personal friend of her and husband Nielex.

He thanked the late councilor his kind gestures toward her family.

According to Parcon’s wife Veronica, the councilor died around 9 p.m. on May 23.

Aside from the Committee on Police Matters, Parcon also handled the SP Committees on Veterans, Retirees, Elderly and Disabled Persons; Committee on Labor, Employment, Manpower Development and Placement; and Committee Communication and Public Information./PN
