Covid surge not slowing down in Aklan

KALIBO, Aklan – The caseloads fueled by a highly contagious variant has shown signs of peaking in recent weeks in the province of Aklan.

Covid-19 cases increased by more than 1,200 percent in just two weeks from 73 active cases on January 7 to 960 cases on January 21.

Aklan reached the 14,000-mark for coronavirus infections since the pandemic began, with a total of 14,101 people with Covid-19 on Friday.

The number of people hospitalized continued its upward trend, reaching 108 on Friday, according to Provincial Health Office-Aklan.

Health authorities logged 873 new lab-confirmed infections from January 14 to 21, 2022 with a positivity rate of 61.56 percent.

Eight additional deaths attributed to Covid-19 from Malay, Ibajay, Lezo, Madalag,  Numancia, Kalibo, Nabas, and Balete were also reported.

There are 367 individuals infected with coronavirus or 38 percent of 960 active cases were placed under home quarantine.

The capital town of Kalibo has seen the highest number of active cases with 275, followed by Malay with 130, Numancia with 82, Makato with 75, and Banga with 61.

Amid the Covid surge, the province of Aklan is still awaiting the results of the whole-genome sequencing from the Philippine Genome Center on the samples taken in the first week of January./PN
