ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 6 launched its first organic trading post (OTP) in the municipality of Jordan, Guimaras.
The OTP aims to strengthen the adoption and practice of organic agriculture and to consume organic product in the country. The availability of OTP is needed to comply with the requirements of organic agriculture standards.
“The opening of OTP not only benefits the municipality of Jordan but also the whole province of Guimaras,” said Mildred Gencaineo, Municipal Agriculturist.
“The post serves as venue to enhance and encourage farmers to engage in organic farming, rice corn and other high-value crops which are organically grown … pesticide-free and a healthier choice for the consumers,” she added.
According to DA provincial agriculturist of Guimaras Ernie Villanueva, Section 18 of RA 10068 mandates the designation of a separate area to display the organic produce to avoid mixing it with non-organic products in retail establishment or stores. Section 19, meanwhile, mandates local chief executives to establish at least one trading post for organic inputs for every local government unit in their area of jurisdiction./PN
