ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Office 6 hosted the ‘Run4RICEponsibility”, a 3-kilometer fun run on Nov. 26.
November is national rice awareness month and this year’s theme is “BROWN4good Challenge Accepted: We bring four goodness by eating brown rice.”
The DA will also hold the Brown Rice Rice Day and Rice Mix Day feeding activities and the brown rice cooking contest in different public elementary schools in the city this week.
According to DA-6 regional executive director Remelyn R. Recoter, farmers and consumers have big roles in promoting awareness on responsible rice consumption and eating healthier rice options particularly that of brown rice or pinawa.
Locally known as pinawa, brown rice is the whole grain form of rice since only the outermost layer called hull is removed. The intact bran gives it a distinct brown or tan color, nutty taste, and chewy texture. The bran also gives it higher content of protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than milled white rice. Its nutritional contents help in the prevention of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer.
Recoter also stressed that the consumption of brown rice will help solve the four major problems of the Filipinos which are undernourishment, farmers’ low income, rice self-sufficiency and hunger./PN
