Dads Deserve the Best Gifts

By Pearl Socias

Dad. Pop. Papa. Tatay.

To many, they are everyday superheroes—providing food on the table, fixing broken household appliances, helping you cram over a school project, generally finding means for us to have quality life, and even have the time to crack up some jokes and curate funny antics.

Beyond the needs of the family, fathers or relevant father figures take on a multitude of roles and responsibilities.

With their hard work and guidance, we had the privilege of exploring life, knowing we could always come back home and rely on them.

Their constant support, innumerable sacrifices, and unconditional love have made our lives better. And if we could only give them the best “thank you” gift they deserve, right?

In honor of them, we celebrate Father’s Day traditionally every third Sunday of June.

Credit for originating the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which at the time was becoming established as a holiday. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father.

Filipinos, meanwhile, have celebrated Father’s Day on its internationally designated date — the third Sunday of June.

In Proclamation No. 266 by late President Corazon Aquino in 1988, she declared the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

This superseded Proclamation No. 2037 of Ferdinand Marcos Sr. in 1980, which declared the first Sunday of December Father’s Day. In 1988, former President Joseph Estrada moved the date of celebration of the occasion to the first Monday of December through Proclamation No. 58. However, many Filipinos are still celebrating Father’s Day with the rest of the globe every third Sunday of June, and this year it falls on June 18, 2023.

While it could take some debate on when the occasion should be celebrated in the Philippines, we could all agree that every “haligi ng tahanan” deserves to be recognized for their significant role in the society

When talking about fatherhood, it is just right to hear it from the father of this rising metropolitan, Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.

He, who loves to prepare delicious meals for his family, said, “I roast turkey with stuffing and all the trimmings for the family every Christmas and New Year’s Eve,”

Indeed, nothing brings families together like a delicious meal with Dad as the gourmand of the house. Although he makes the best adobo and only his cooking could get you to eat kare-kare, it’s your turn to treat him.

Take your dad’s palate to a memorable dining experience with a wide selection of restaurants, cafes, and eateries.

If he craves good old Filipino dishes, find some at Gerry’s Grill, Max’s and Kuya J, whether grilled, fried, sautéed or braised—seafood, poultry or meat. If he prefers a hearty steak or international cuisine, you’ll also find an array of selections for the perfect spot.

After all the hearty eating, have some coffee to stimulate digestion. Take a sip at Kucho Café or Seattle’s Best and pair it with an overdue, wholesome life talk with your dad.

One of many love languages is to cook food for your loved ones to share. Iloilo City’s mayor Jerry P. Treñas brings his family together with their favorite dishes. This Father’s Day, create lasting memories and dine together at SM City Iloilo.

Like other dads, the city mayor also gets a day off work. And just as much as he gives quality service to the people of Iloilo City, he also always remembers to spend quality time with the family.

“I always watched the movies with my children every Sunday and we would have some snacks. My children always looked forward to it since the movies and the pizza were always part of their Sundays. I also did it with my father when we were still in school and it was always part of our weekend,” Treñas said.

So instead of getting a material gift, or maybe in addition to it, give Dad time and affection.

Bond together over the weekend by entering a movieverse of his choosing.

The mayor added: “I have always enjoyed going to SM City Iloilo with my family. We shop for our needs or watch movies. It is a place where our families and friends can bond and enjoy each other’s company.”

If your dad is a fan of action-packed movies, catch the thrilling adventures of Spiderman and Transformers on the big screen. Sit back, relax, and enjoy these blockbusters with your dad by your side.

An automobile enthusiast, specifically Volkswagen, Engr. Dixon L. Legayada defined fatherhood as “The most highly responsible duty that a man can ever have. It’s raising a child, bringing them up in today’s society so they are learning everything we have taught them.”

As dads deserve the finest, they should also see the shiniest wheels in the metro. Among many other things, dads love vintage cars. They are timeless classic pieces of history that evoke nostalgia. Let us also not forget that they signal taste and style.

Volkswagen cars, specifically, have a simplistic but eye-catching design and a build that provides a comfortable ride and safety. These German cars have durable mechanics, just like every dad is dependable. The original concept behind the first Volkswagen, the company, and its name is a car affordable and practical for common people. When the first Volkswagen Beetle rolled off for production, it was simply called the Volkswagen—“the people’s car” in German—but its distinctive shape inspired nicknames across the globe: Beetle, Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, or Maggiolino.

Get up close and personal with these stunning vehicles and admire their sleek designs and impressive features. It is the perfect opportunity for your dad to indulge his love for cars and share his passion with the family.
