MANILA — Savannah Davison stamped her class as the Premier Volleyball League’s newest superstar after steering the PLDT High Speed Hitters to back-to-back championships and clinching her maiden MVP award in the Invitational Conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The 26-year-old Fil-Canadian outside hitter turned in a season to remember, ranking in the Top 10 of almost every statistical category while proving instrumental in PLDT’s 21-25, 31-29, 25-22, 25-18 comeback win over Kobe Shinwa University of Japan in the one-game finals.
“This is one of the hardest games we played this year,” Davison said. “They’re (Kobe Shinwa) really a good team, they’re really a good opponent, they really challenged us. I think we came into this game knowing that if they gave us an opportunity, we have to take it.”
Despite missing a game in the eliminations, Davison still placed third in scoring with 94 points on 81 attacks, nine blocks, and four aces. She also ranked second in spiking (38.57%), third in serving (0.22 aces/set), sixth in blocking (0.50/set), and seventh in receiving (30.00%).
Other awardees included Creamline’s Jema Galanza, who bagged her sixth Best Outside Hitter plum, and Kobe Shinwa’s Nagisa Komatsuda, who led all scorers with 104 points. Chery Tiggo’s Ara Galang earned Best Opposite Spiker, Creamline’s Jeanette Panaga and ZUS Coffee’s Riza Nogales shared Best Middle Blocker honors, PLDT’s Kath Arado secured her fifth Best Libero award, while Kobe Shinwa’s Sakura Furuta was named Best Setter./PN
