Defensor-Gallar split: No hurt feelings

ILOILO – Both Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. and Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) member Emmanuel Gallar agreed their political split would remain just that – political. Nothing personal. No hurt feelings.

A long-time ally of Defensor, Gallar (3rd District) has decided to transfer political allegiance – from Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Gallar, a three-term SP member, said he would run for mayor in Cabatuan town.

“Waay man hurt feelings kay politika man lang ini. Ang politika saylo-saylo man lang,” said Gallar.

Gallar is expected to campaign for NP’s presumptive gubernatorial candidate Cong. Ferjenel Biron, who is likely to clash against Defensor’s son, Cong. Arthur Defensor Jr.

Gallar said he decided to join the NP because it would be difficult for him to run for mayor as an independent candidate.

The NP machinery would surely help him, he added.

Cabatuan mayor Ronilo Caspe is expected to seek reelection under Defensor’s PDP-Laban.

The governor said Caspe is eligible for another term so Gallar’s bid for mayor could not be accommodated by the party.

“Alangan pahalinon ta si Caspe. Puede ka maka-kandidato kon indi ka ma-akumodar sa isa ka partido. Puede ka kasaylo sa pihak,” said Defensor.

Gallar said running for a higher elective post, say vice governor or congressman, was not in his political radar, thus running for mayor was more logical.

“Deretso na ‘ya ni Manny kon gusto ‘ya magkandidato mayor,” said Defensor.

Gallar said serving his town mates would be an honor.

“Tapos na term ko as Provincial Board member. Gusto ko mag-concentrate sa akon banwa,” he said.

Gallar said Defensor understood and accepted his decision./PN
