KALIBO, Aklan – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) reported a 19-percent decrease in the number of dengue cases in the province in the first half of the year.

The cases dropped to 429 from January to July 6 this year, from 535 in the same period in 2016.

Most of the dengue cases were from Kalibo (101), Provincial Health Officer Cornelio Cuachon Jr. said. Numancia followed with 56; New Washington, 38; Malinao, 31; and Banga, 28.

Malay had 24 cases; Makato, 23; Nabas, 16; Ibajay, Batan and Balete, 15 each; Altavas and Libacao, 14 each; Tangalan, 12; Lezo, eight; and Madalag and Buruanga, five each.

Most of the patients were females (226), the PHO said.

Majority of them were aged 1 to 10 years old (140).

Patients under the age group 11 to 20 years old numbered 115, while those in the 21 to 30 years old age bracket, 76. Six cases were newborns.

The PHO also recorded 41 patients aged 31 to 40 years old; 24 were 41 to 50 years old; and 27 were 51 years old and above.

Dengue is a tropical and subtropical mosquito-borne infection that can cause severe illness and death.
For the last 30 years, dengue fever has dramatically expanded its geographical range and shortened its epidemic cycle in many places.

According to the World Health Organization, dengue is endemic in over 100 countries, and approximately two-fifths of the world’s population is currently at risk of dengue fever with an estimated 50 million infections annually. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
