CAPIZ — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Capiz is pursuing the designation of Tucad Reef in the municipality of Pilar as a protected seascape to ensure the conservation of its rich marine biodiversity and promote sustainable environmental practices.
In a local radio interview, Dr. Ernest Federiso, officer in charge of DENR–Capiz, underscored the ecological significance of Tucad Reef, which covers 125.24 hectares of seagrass beds and 110.16 hectares of coral reefs.
He said the area plays a vital role in marine life cycles and is crucial in maintaining ecological balance in coastal waters.
Federiso noted that the reef is home to a diverse range of marine species, including 10 species of seagrass, six vulnerable species, and nine endangered species.
The presence of such biodiversity highlights the reef’s importance as a critical habitat for marine organisms and the broader coastal ecosystem, making its protection imperative against threats such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
To advance the conservation effort, DENR–Capiz has completed and submitted a Protected Area Suitability Assessment (PASA) report to its regional office.
The PASA provides scientific data and assessments that establish the ecological value of the reef and serve as the basis for management decisions and conservation strategies tailored to the area’s unique ecosystem.
In addition, the DENR is strengthening partnerships with the local government unit of Pilar, the Provincial Government of Capiz, and the Office of the First District Congressman to secure resources, funding, and community support for the initiative.
Through these collaborations, the agency aims to implement comprehensive conservation strategies that emphasize community awareness and participation.
The move to protect Tucad Reef aligns with broader national efforts to preserve the country’s natural heritage amid mounting environmental challenges.
If approved, the designation of Tucad Reef as a protected seascape is expected to serve as a model for similar conservation initiatives nationwide while contributing to the sustainable development and resilience of coastal communities that depend on marine resources for their livelihoods./PN
