MANILA – All schools across the country have already started classes for school year 2024-2025, the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday.
Further, according to DepEd, school operations were “back to normal” as none were being used as evacuation centers anymore.
Last week, some schools opted to delay their scheduled reopening of classes due to the southwest monsoon (habagat) and Super Typhoon Carina.
Around a thousand schools in the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon, Ilocos Region, Calabarzon, and Soccsksargen did not open classes on July 29.
Carina and the enhanced southwest monsoon brought floods, swollen rivers, landslides, and soil erosion, among others, in various parts of the country.
Meanwhile, DepEd Undersecretary Revsee Escobedo said at least P1.6 billion are needed to reconstruct or repair damaged schools.
Escobedo also noted that 355 classrooms were totally damaged, while 1,555 others sustained partial damage.
These were located in nine regions, namely: NCR, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas./PN
