ILOILO City – The Department of Education (DepEd) Region 6 is appealing to all parents to be partners in the battle to make each child a reader.
DepEd-6 celebrated the National Reading Month yesterday through a virtual storytelling event with Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo as invited storyteller to selected school children.
“The teachers and parents are in great position to ensure that reading is a key part of the children’s daily routine,” said Director Gemma Ledesma.
She underscored the significant value of reading as a crucial element in a child’s education.
Ledesma said DepEd is counting on parents to assist their children with the present set-up of classes based on the strict adherence to the government’s health protocols.
She added that the shift of role from teachers to the parents has a great impact on the reading competency of school children.
“We appeal to parents to be with us in our battle to make each child a reader. Each parent shall endeavor to continue to provide the children at home every learning opportunity that they get,” said Ledesma.
She also emphasized, “If a parent reads to the child on a regular basis, they will undoubtedly develop a stronger relationship.”
“Children will feel reassured and loved when parents read to them,” Ledesma said.
Meanwhile, Mateo read to the children a time-related story book entitled “Covibook.”
The story was related to coronavirus disease 2019, its threat and how to prevent one’s self from being infected.
Through the story, the children were taught about the virus and the basic health protocols such proper hand washing and use of hand sanitizer, and wearing of facemask.
