MANILA – The government has been urged to create a new department that will oversee the quality and prices of Internet services.

While there are agencies like the Departments of Science and Technology and Trade and Industry, and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), they have failed to address Internet-related concerns, said Sen. Bam Aquino.

The Senate has scheduled to investigate the country’s expensive but dismal Internet speed “two to three weeks from now,” added Aquino who called for the probe.

The senator chairs of the Senate committee on trade.

“People are complaining a lot and we want to know how we can improve Internet services,” Aquino stressed.

Aquino earlier asked NTC to provide a “logical” and “clear explanation” on the country’s unreliable Internet connection.

Telecommunications companies here only provide “3.6 megabytes per second” Internet speed while other Asian countries enjoy internet speeds of from 4.0 megabytes per second to 51 megabytes per second, according to Aquino./PN
