ILOILO City – The Department of Health (DOH) is urging Western Visayans aged 35 and above to undergo diabetes screening as the disease has become the country’s fifth leading cause of death.
Health officials warn that thousands may already be living with the condition without knowing it.
Citing data from the Field Health Information System, DOH Region 6 said 4.34 percent of the Philippine population is currently affected by diabetes, underscoring the need for early detection and prompt management to prevent life-threatening complications.
Health authorities stressed that diabetes, a chronic disease affecting millions, can be effectively managed and its complications minimized through early diagnosis and proper treatment.
“Early detection is vital for the prevention of complications,” DOH-6 said.
“We recommend that everyone aged 35 and above undergo thorough testing for diabetes, irrespective of whether they are experiencing symptoms. Many individuals may be unaware of their condition, and without testing, the disease can silently progress,” the agency added.
The appeal forms part of the observance of Diabetes Awareness Month, during which the agency is encouraging the public to undergo regular glucose testing, particularly because many diabetes cases remain undiagnosed until complications develop.
DOH-6 also called on the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to help maintain normal blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
The agency advised residents to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins while limiting unhealthy fats, sugar and salt. It also encouraged at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity daily, such as walking, cycling or swimming.
Health officials likewise urged the public to avoid smoking, vaping and excessive alcohol consumption, saying these habits can worsen diabetes-related health problems.
Regular medical check-ups and consultations were also recommended to help individuals better understand their health risks and receive proper guidance on lifestyle changes.
DOH-6 encouraged residents to visit the nearest health center for diabetes screening and professional advice. Those seeking more information may also contact the DOH Hotline 1555.
Officials expressed optimism that increased public awareness and proactive health practices would lead to improved health outcomes and significantly reduce diabetes-related complications./PN
