MANILA – The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will leave it up to local authorities on whether they would seal gun muzzles of cops this holiday season.
Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said while he believes that the sealing of muzzles of firearms is still “effective” as deterrent to indiscriminate firing of guns, it is up to local commanders to decide.
“We leave it to the directors and commanders ng PNP units. Every year, alam na nila ang gagawin diyan. Pero effective pa rin talaga ‘yan, ‘yung merong tape,” Año said in an interview with DZBB.
“May pirma pa ‘yan, may countersign ‘yan para sigurado na kung talagang hindi naman kailangan ay hindi puputok ‘yung baril na ‘yan,” he added.
According to Año, the guns can be used on official duty but those cannot be fired even for warning shots.
Just last week, President Rodrigo Duterte warned policemen, the military and civilians that they could be charged with homicide or murder if someone dies when they fire their guns./PN
