ILOILO City – The week leading to the Dinagyang Festival highlights on Jan. 27 and 28 saw a drop in crime volume, according to the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
The city police recorded 15 crime incidents – a 68-percent decline from the 47 incidents reported in the same period last year.
There were five cases each for physical injury and theft last year; there were only four physical injury cases and no theft this year, according to Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, ICPO director.
Police presence most especially in the Dinagyang Festival performance areas contributed to the drop in crime volume, said Biñas.
The five performance areas were Freedom Grandstand, Iloilo provincial capitol, corner Mabini-Delgado streets, corner Quezon-Ledesma streets, and Maria Clara area. These teemed with people watching Dinagyang tribes perform.
Nearly 5,000 law enforcers and force multipliers were mobilized on Saturday and Sunday (policemen, soldiers from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine Coast Guard, Maritime Command, students from universities, and barangay tanods, among others).
The ICPO also reported no violations of the gun ban but some spectators were prevented to enter in the performance areas because they were carrying backpacks.
