ILOILO City β The woman who threw her newborn daughter into an irrigation canal in Barangay Agsalanan, Dingle, Iloilo reportedly had a mental illness, police said yesterday.
Residents found the lifeless newborn around 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
With the help of barangay officials, officers from the Dingle police station arrested the 39-year-old mother yesterday.
Senior Inspector Samuel Vipinosa, Dingle police chief, said the mother admitted that the dead baby found at the irrigation canal was hers.
To verify her mental condition, police brought the mother to a mental health facility in the nearby municipality of Pototan for a psychiatric assessment.
βWe could neither charge nor detain her if she is mentally incapacitated,β stressed Vipinosa.
Police were still waiting for the assessment results as of this writing.
From what the police so far gathered, her husband was threatening to hurt the mother if she gets pregnant. She told the police that she gave birth on Tuesday and that the baby was still alive when she threw it.
βThatβs her claim. We are not so sure if she was telling the truth,β Vipinosa said./PN
