ILOILO City – The Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas has warned about the potential health effects of Mount Kanlaon’s eruption on Negros Island.

“In light of ongoing monitoring and response operations in Negros Occidental due to the phreatic eruption of Mount Kanlaon, DOH Western Visayas advises the public to be aware of the potential health effects during ashfall or volcanic eruption,” said Regional Director Dr. Adriano Suba-an.

The DOH outlined several health risks associated with volcanic ash exposure:

* nasal and throat irritation, often accompanied by coughing

* respiratory issues from inhaling volcanic gases and ash, potentially worsening chronic conditions

* long-term lung disease risk from prolonged exposure to ash

* contaminated water due to increased chlorine demand for disinfection, potentially making water unsafe for drinking

* skin irritation and possible infections caused by scratching

* acute gastroenteritis from inadequately disinfected water

Preventive Measures

To safeguard public health, the DOH urged residents to stay indoors, especially children, and avoid strenuous activities to reduce inhalation of fine ash particles.

It also encouraged the use of well-fitted masks to minimize respiratory exposure.

According to DOH, people should also avoid road travel where visibility is compromised due to ash.

Close windows and doors to limit indoor ash contamination; individuals with chronic respiratory conditions should remain inside, it added.

To protect the eyes, wear goggles or eyeglasses, not contact lenses, DOH added.

It also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of drinking water by verifying its quality.

Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption, it also said.

DOH urged the public to follow advisories from reliable sources and seek immediate medical consultation if feeling unwell.

Proactive monitoring and strict adherence to health protocols are vital to mitigating the eruption’s health impacts, it stressed./PN
