DOLE seeks to ramp up number of labor inspectors

MANILA – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is seeking to hire more labor inspectors to effectively implement labor law compliance in business establishments across the country.

In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB, Labor secretary Silvestre Bello III lamented how undermanned the DOLE is in terms of the number of labor law compliance officers or inspectors.

Kulang na kulang… All throughout the country we have 900,000 plus business establishments pero alam mo ba ilan ang inspectors namin? Wala pang 900,” Bello said.

The Labor chief clarified that the need to beef up the number of DOLE labor inspectors is not merely intended to monitor the labor law compliance of foreign workers amid the influx of Chinese nationals in the country.

Bello also said the DOLE ensures that no foreign worker will be given an alien employment permit if the nature of the job he or she is applying for can be performed by a Filipino.

The Labor chief said he has already received word from Finance secretary Carlos Dominguez III that he will help him in his request to hire additional labor inspectors.

“In fact, nakausap na namin ang DBM (Department of Budget and Management) na bigyan kami ng 500 to 1,000 inspectors,” Bello said. (GMA News)
