ROXAS City – Soldiers and locals trekked for more than six hours to bring donated materials to a school in the hinterland barangay of Rizal Norte in Tapaz, Capiz.

Among the donated items were galvanized iron sheets and makeshift classroom materials, toys, food packs, and used clothing.

Philippine Army’s 61st Infantry Battalion (61IB) personnel and some Rizal Norte residents passed by a mountainous area in Jamindan town before reaching the Rizal Norte Primary School in Tapaz on March 22.

Department of Education – Tapaz East District supervisor Angel Payo and teachers Dexter Ferasol and Xyric Andrade joined them.

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Capiz Information Center and the Capiz Association of Government Public Information Officers, Inc. (Cagpio) facilitated the donations.

The initiative was an offshoot of 61IB commander Col. Leonardo I. Peña’s presentation before Cagpio members on the various intensified peace support operations, especially in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas, to compensate the absence of basic services due to accessibility issues.

“On behalf of Rizal Norte Primary School, I would like to extend my deepest sense of gratitude to the 61IB and its stakeholders for choosing our school to be the beneficiary of these goods,” said teacher Charlyn Geromiano during a ceremonial turnover of the donations at the battalion’s headquarters in Barangay Lagdungan, Tapaz.

The same was posted on the timeline of the teacher’s Facebook account, citing Peña and 61IB information officer 1st Lieutenant Hazel Joy Durotan.

“You have added another sweet ingredient to the lives of our pupils,” she added. “Surely, the people of Rizal Norte, Tapaz, Capiz will always remember you because of your generosity.”

PIA Capiz Information Center manager Jemin Guillermo and Cagpio president Esperedion Pelaez led the campaign donation in December last year and just this January.

Among the donors were PIA, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Bureau of Fire Protection, Capiz Police Provincial Office, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Trade and Industry, National Food Authority, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Ports Authority, Provincial Health Office, Philippine Red Cross, Provincial Population Office, and local governments of Sapi-an and Pontevedra.
