ILOILO – Will the May 14 barangay election push through?

Voting 14-2 on Monday, the House of Representatives’ committee on suffrage and electoral reforms approved the postponement of the barangay elections from May 14 to October 8 also this year.

Whatever the fate of the polls this year, however, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. challenged the 1,721 barangay captains in the province to set a good example by not engaging in money politics and harassment of voters.

At the recent Liga ng mga Barangay Iloilo Provincial Congress held at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod City, Defensor lamented that the barangay election is usually manipulated by politicians and marred by vote buying.

“Tilawan ta ang eleksyon nga matinlu,” said Defensor.

The synchronized barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections are set on May 14 after these were postponed in October last year – unless the Senate concurs with the Lower House to move these to another later date.

Clean, fair and honest – the barangay and SK elections must be these, stressed Defensor.

Get the trust and confidence of the people through better public service instead of buying their votes or intimidating them, he advised barangay officials.

Defensor cited his 34-year political career as example. He won elections without buying votes or threatening voters, he said.

Sincere and responsive public service earned him the Ilonggos’ love and respect, revealed the governor.

“Magbakal ka sang boto is form of cheating,” said Defensor./PN
