Don’t risk lives, don’t drive drunk – LTO

BACOLOD City – Driving drunk will only risk lives, stressed Land Transportation Office (LTO) regional director Roland Ramos.

“People must not drive drunk. It is unsafe to drive under the influence of alcohol,” he added.

Ramos said the LTO is now working with the police to strictly implement Republic 10586, or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.

On Monday, joint elements of LTO-Negros Occidental’s enforcement team and the Traffic Management Unit of the Bacolod City Police Office arrested a driver who violated the law.

The driver – whose identity was not disclosed – was fined P5,000 for driving with alcohol level above normal, said Ramos.

The normal alcohol level is 0.5 g/dL. The driver had 1.4 g/dL based on LTO’s breath analyzer, Ramos added.

A breath analyzer is a device used to estimate blood alcohol content.

Citing that 85 percent of traffic accidents are alcohol-related, Ramos said their crackdown on drunk drivers will be conducted regularly./PN
