BORACAY, Aklan – Police authorities of this resort-island warned the public to refrain from sharing false bomb threats.

The reminder was made by the Boracay Tourists Assistance Center (BTAC) following the fake bomb threat which resulted in the cancellation of classes in a school in this resort-island on Tuesday.

Senior Inspector Jose Mark Gesulga, acting Boracay police chief, in an interview on Wednesday, said spreading of any hoax bomb threat was a criminal offense and would create fear for the public, especially this time when terror threat was possible.

“Whether false of real, any bomb threat is very alarming,” said Gesulga.

He stressed that hoax bomb threats, bomb scare or jokes could cause alarm and panic in the community, especially in Boracay with thousands of tourists.

Gesulga said false threats could also “create fear especially because of the ongoing crisis in Mindanao.”

He likewise reminded the public to remain vigilant and report any threats to authorities first instead of spreading the information.

Presidential Decree No. 1727, commonly referred to as Anti-Bomb Joke Law, states that any person spreading false information as to the presence of bombs, explosives, and other incendiary devices in high density or sensitive places could face penalty of not more than five years imprisonment or a fine of not more than P40,000 or both at the discretion of the court.

Gesulga said the police were still determining where the false bomb threat started. (PNA)
