ILOILO City – Mayor Jerry Treñas has once again expressed frustration over delays in the completion of critical road projects under the supervision of Engr. Roy C. Pacanan, head of the Department of Public Works and Highways – Iloilo City District Engineering Office (DPWH-ICDEO).
The projects, situated along JM Basa Street and Calle Real, are essential to the city’s downtown commercial hub but remain unfinished, he stressed.
In a Dec. 17 letter to DPWH secretary Manuel Bonoan, Treñas criticized the ICDEO’s failure to meet the initial Dec. 13, 2024 deadline, followed by an unmet extension to Dec. 16.
He requested urgent intervention from Bonoan to ensure the project is completed by December 20, 2024.
Treñas described Pacanan’s project management as “unprofessional” and “insensitive” to the needs of over 500,000 residents of Iloilo City.
“These delays contradict the DPWH’s mission of delivering ‘Serbisyong May Bilis: Building Better More for a New Philippines,’” Treñas said.
He lamented the heavy traffic and disruptions caused to business activities, residents, and commuters affected by the snail-paced roadworks at the vital economic hub of the metro.
In his appeal to Bonoan, Treñas reiterated the need to expedite the project’s completion and restore normalcy in the downtown area.
“On behalf of the loving people of Iloilo City, I am grateful for your continued support and infrastructure projects for our beloved city,” he told Bonoan./PN
