ILOILO City – A police officer was arrested for drunken assault and illegal discharge of firearm in Barangay Tingib, Pandan, Antique on May 4 Tuesday.

The suspect was identified as Police Staff Sergeant Jhun Alvarez, who was assigned at the Pandan Police Station.

Initial investigations by the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) show that Alvarez was in a quarrel with his live-in partner around 8 p.m. He then mauled the complainant and poked his M16 rifle at her. He also reportedly threatened her partner’s mother-in-law, prompting her to call the police.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Lilibeth Unlayao, and Police Staff Sergeants Raffy Lucinio and Arnel Delos Santos responded to the call. The officers tried to pacify Alvarez, but he resisted and fired his weapon once. A grapple ensued where the three officers finally subdued and disarmed the suspect.

According to PRO-6 spokesperson, Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, Alvarez will be relieved from his post and possibly transferred to the Regional Personnel Holding and Accounting Unit (RPHAU).

“He was drunk, and he will be facing many cases because his live-in partner and her mother are willing to file a criminal case against him for violence against women and children (VAWC), grave threats, illegal discharge of firearm, and resisting arrest,” Malong said.

Malong added that the Regional Internal Affairs Service (RIAS) will conduct a “motu proprio” to determine his specific administrative cases. “If proven that he was guilty, he will be dismissed from the service. The PRO-6 is not tolerating erring police personnel who will ruin the image of the PNP.”/PN
