Duterte: ‘Sorry, God’

President Rodrigo Duterte

MANILA – “Sorry, God.”

President Rodrigo Duterte apologized for calling God “stupid” and questioning the concept of Original Sin.

“If it’s the same God, I’m sorry, that’s how it is,” Duterte said during a meeting with Jesus Is Lord leader Eddie Villanueva in Malacañang on Tuesday night.

“Sorry, God. I said, sorry God,” the President is heard saying in a video the Presidential Communications Operations Office posted on Facebook. “If God is taken in a generic term by everybody listening, then that’s well and good.”

Sen. Panfilo Lacson welcomed Duterte’s apology to God. “It takes courage and character for a man to openly accept his mistake and apologize.”

Lacson also maintained that there is only one existing God.

“I can only thank God for enlightening our President to make that humble apology. It shouldn’t matter much if it was my God or his God he is apologizing to, because there is only one God of the universe anyway,” said Lacson.

“I know there are firm God believers like me supporting his presidency who can now get over with the dilemma of whether or not to continue supporting his leadership. We can now move on while praying for his continued enlightenment,” he added.

His meeting with Villanueva “may have had some influence” in Duterte’s decision to issue an apology, Sen. Juan Edgardo Angara said.

“His apology will be welcomed by many, no doubt. Although there is a constitutional separation of Church and State. Many of our countrymen hold God and their religion very close to their hearts, thus a welcome development,” Angara added./PN
