MANILA – The Malacañang on Sunday said that United States President Donald Trump called President Rodrigo Duterte late Saturday night to express his commitment to the PH-US alliance.
Trump also reaffirmed his friendly relations with Duterte, according to presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella.
“President Trump likewise mentioned that he looks forward to his visit to the Philippines in November for the East Asia Summit,” Abella said.
The leaders talked at around 11 p.m. after the Asean gala dinner for leaders and delegates.
In a statement, the White House Press Secretary said that Trump invited the Filipino leader to the White House “to disuss the importance of the United States-Philippines alliance, which is now heading in a very positive direction.”
The White House press office also described Trump’s call with Duterte as “very friendly.”
“The two leaders discussed the concerns of the ASEAN regarding regional security, including the threat posed by North Korea. They also discussed the fact that the Philippine government is fighting very hard to rid its country of drugs, a scourge that affects many countries throughout the world,” it further said.
