MANILA — Alexandra Eala made a resounding statement at the start of her Madrid Open campaign, overpowering Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-3, 6-3, in the women’s singles Round of 128 on Wednesday to underline her growing presence on the WTA Tour.
The 20-year-old Filipina dictated play from start to finish at the Arantxa Sanchez Stadium, controlling rallies and capitalizing on key moments to dispatch the seasoned Russian in straight sets.
Eala anchored her performance on a steady and reliable service game, firing one ace against just one double fault while landing 70 percent of her first serves.
She translated that consistency into dominance, winning 76 percent of her first-serve points compared to just 50 percent for Pavlyuchenkova.
The Filipina standout also excelled under pressure, converting 4 of 8 break-point opportunities while limiting her opponent to only 1 of 6.
Eala finished with 68 total points against Pavlyuchenkova’s 50 and controlled the match in games won, 12-6.
Although she conceded ground on second-serve points, 37 percent to 56 percent, Eala compensated with aggressive court positioning and sharp returns, collecting 26 receiving points to keep the Russian on the back foot.
She also showcased her ability to seize momentum, stringing together runs of up to three consecutive games and a stretch of nine straight points.
