AUCKLAND, New Zealand — Alexandra Eala delivered one of the biggest singles wins of her young career on Tuesday, grinding out a three-set comeback to eliminate seasoned Croatian campaigner Donna Vekić, 4–6, 6–4, 6–4, in the round of 32 of the ASB Classic.
The 20-year-old Filipina showed composure beyond her years, overturning a first-set loss with sharper returning and steadier service games to prevail in a two-hour Center Court battle against one of the tour’s more experienced competitors.
Eala converted six of her 12 break-point chances and edged Vekić in total points won, 103–96, in a match defined by long rallies and momentum swings. Both players posted identical 58 percent first-serve rates, but Eala made better use of hers, winning 67 percent of points behind her first delivery.
“It’s so special. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned in 2025, it’s that home is a people and not a place. So, thank you everyone. Maraming salamat,” Eala said during her on-court interview.
The Filipina absorbed pressure throughout the contest, particularly in the deciding set, where she matched Vekić shot for shot while minimizing unforced errors. Vekić struck seven aces but was undone by nine double faults, allowing Eala to stay within reach and capitalize at critical moments.
“Like you said, she’s such an experienced player and super talented and definitely very decorated,” Eala said of Vekić. “So, I really had a tough time today, but I’m most happy about being able to compete and show up at the level like this, especially after such a tough preseason and so many things that’s happened over the past month. So, I’m proud about that.”
With the victory, Eala advanced to the round of 16, where she is set to face world No. 82 Petra Marcinko on Thursday. She is also seeing action in doubles, teaming up with Iva Jovic against the pairing of Renata Zarazúa and Jesika Malecková./PN
