INDIAN WELLS, California — Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala battled through a grueling three-set duel to defeat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, and storm into the Round of 32 of the Indian Wells Masters women’s singles tournament on Saturday (Philippine time).
The hard-fought victory, achieved after more than two hours of intense rallies and momentum swings, underscored the 31st-ranked Filipina’s resilience as she held her nerve in the decisive set to overcome the powerful Ukrainian and keep her campaign alive in one of the biggest tournaments outside the Grand Slams.
Eala displayed solid efficiency on serve, finishing with two aces while landing 75 percent of her first serves. She also proved more effective on second serve points, winning 60 percent compared to Yastremska’s 46 percent.
While Yastremska unleashed eight aces, the Ukrainian struggled with consistency and committed 15 double faults, far more than Eala’s four.
The Filipina capitalized on crucial opportunities throughout the match, converting seven of her 14 break points while winning 59 receiving points overall.
Eala also finished with superior totals in both points and games won, tallying 113 points and 18 games compared to Yastremska’s 109 points and 16 games.
The match unfolded as a tight contest from start to finish. Eala secured the opening set, 7-5, before Yastremska fought back in the second, 6-4, to force a deciding third set.
In the final frame, the Filipino teenager showed remarkable composure, matching her opponent rally for rally before breaking serve late to seal the decisive 7-5 victory.
Eala also demonstrated strong focus during critical stretches of the match, winning as many as eight consecutive points at one stage while matching Yastremska with a maximum run of three straight games.
With the win, Eala advances to the Round of 32 where she will face American star Coco Gauff, setting up a high-profile showdown as the Filipina continues her impressive run in the prestigious tournament.
Meanwhile, Eala and partner Iva Jovic bowed out of the women’s doubles competition after suffering a 6-2, 6-2 loss to the tandem of Jelena Ostapenko and Hailey Baptiste in their Round of 32 match.
