DUBAI, UAE — Alexandra Eala continues to blaze a historic trail on the WTA Tour, powering into the quarterfinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after outclassing Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea, 7-5, 6-4, Wednesday night (Thursday morning in the Philippines).
The 19-year-old Filipina showed poise beyond her years, dismantling the veteran Romanian with precision serving and relentless baseline pressure to book a blockbuster quarterfinal showdown against American star Coco Gauff.
Ranked No. 47 in the world, Eala dictated the tempo in key stretches, stringing together seven straight games to seize control of a tightly contested match and silence Cîrstea’s counterpunching threat.
“I think the key to today was staying calm and trusting my shots. I think I’m solid in particular moments where I needed to be, and that reflected in my performance and the score as well,” Eala said.
“Every round is such a battle and filled with tension, so I’m really happy with how I performed. I’m really happy to be able to share it with all of you,” added the PSA co-Athlete of the Year.
Eala proved lethal on return, converting four of nine break-point opportunities while limiting Cîrstea to just two breaks on four chances. She dominated the numbers sheet, finishing with a 77-64 edge in total points won, including a decisive 31-24 advantage on receiving points.
While she did not fire an ace, Eala leaned on consistency and placement, winning 67 percent of her first-serve points and an even more impressive 74 percent on her second serve. She also landed 69 percent of her first serves — a stark contrast to Cîrstea’s 55 percent — keeping the Romanian under sustained pressure throughout the one-hour, 45-minute encounter.
Cîrstea struck two aces but faltered behind her second serve, capturing only 52 percent of those points as Eala relentlessly attacked.
